Doo’s and Don’ts for septic systems.

DO:

  • Use biodegradable, septic-safe cleaning products
  • Use non-cotton-based TP
  • Scrape food off dishes before washing
  • Don't use, or limit use of antibacterial soaps
  • Don't use a garbage disposal
  • Conserve water when you can
  • Make sure you fix leaks promptly
  • Scrape dishes well before washing
  • Do not plant trees and other large-rooted plants over or near the drainfield
  • Have your tank inspected at least once per year by a licensed professional

Do NOT wash or flush:

  • Grease, oil, or fats
  • Bleach
  • Dairy products
  • Feminine products
  • Chemicals: Paint, pesticides, varnish
  • Paper towels or other cotton products
  • Food scraps
  • Condoms
  • Cigarette butts
  • Diapers
  • Cat litter

Happy septic tips:

  • If you are a large household, have your tank inspected and pumped more often
  • Your tank is full of good bacteria! If you or anyone in your home is on antibiotics, have your tank pumped frequently as they kills that good bacteria!
  • Consider reducing water flow by using low-flow shower-heads and faucets
  • Run full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher
  • Try vinegar and baking soda instead of harsh chemicals for cleaning - you'll be surprised at how well it works, and will save money on cleaning products!
  • Know the size of your tank! This is an important factor in how often you need to have it pumped!
  • Big family? stagger your showers and baths, and your laundry! Try splitting loads over several days to give your septic field more time to drain.
  • Get your septic serviced before a freeze! Frozen ground leads to frozen pipes and components, which makes cleaning it a little more tricky.

FAQs

How often should I have my septic tank pumped?

It can vary greatly depending on usage. The number of people in your home, how careful you are about chemicals and materials going into your toilets and drains, and some specific septic systems with specialized components can effect the frequency of pumping.

Generally, you should have your tank pumped every 3-5 years.

In Kitsap and Jefferson Counties, you are required to have your tank inspected once per year.

You will also want to ask for an inspection if you notice any bad smells, excessive moisture in the drainfield, your water starts to drain slowly, and of course, if your septic alarm starts to sound.

An inspection will help to determine what component needs to be fixed.

Please let us know if you are requesting an inspection because you suspect there are issues.
